House Of Ashur Shines As A Worthy Spinoff

The Starz series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, has emerged as a worthy spinoff of the original Spartacus series that aired from 2010 to 2013. Despite initial comparisons to the 2000 film Gladiator, House of Ashur carves out its own niche with surprisingly sturdy storytelling. The series takes its time unfolding its larger plot, allowing each new development to feel organic and earned.

At the center of the show is Ashur, played by Ditchay Tarabay, who brings a delicious bombast to the role of the arrogant, mercurial, and self-centered character. Ashur's machinations, though initially unsuccessful, eventually bear fruit, making his minor victories all the sweeter. The show's attention to character development is evident in Achillia's journey, as she earns her place as a worthy champion through grueling hours of struggle.

The cast is rounded out by Claudia Black as Cossutia, a wonderfully wicked noble who plots to make an example of Ashur, an outsider who threatens to "pollute the pure waters of the republic." Simon Arblater also stars as Proculus, a vicious noble who shares Cossutia's goal.
