Under The Starry Skies: CHANEL's Celestial Quest For Eternity

Under The Starry Skies: CHANEL's Celestial Quest For Eternity

The celestial world of constellations has long fascinated humans, and none more so than the iconic fashion designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. In 1932, she expressed her admiration for the stars, stating that she wanted to cover "women in constellations... Stars!" This remarkable quote led to the creation of her first high-jewelry collection, featuring a stunning diamond necklace shaped like a comet.

This fascination with stars was a recurring theme in Chanel's work, often incorporating celestial symbols to enhance women's beauty. This artistic approach has been revisited by Olivier Polge, CHANEL's in-house perfumer, who has created a new fragrance in the Les Exclusifs de Chanel line, called Comète. The perfume is inspired by the cosmic splendor of the stars, with Polge describing it as "making me think of stardust." To achieve this otherworldly quality, Polge combined cherry blossom accord... heliotrope, and iris notes to create a fragrance that is powdery, luminous, and flowery.

At CHANEL, the craftsmanship of their perfumes is unparalleled. Not only do Polge and his team create the fragrance, but they also produce and often handcraft the raw materials. This dedication to quality is evident in the way they cultivate iris, a key ingredient, in the south of France. It takes three years for the plants to develop their roots, and the scent only fully develops as the ingredient dries.

After six years, the team can extract the scent... highlighting the meticulous attention to detail. Polge's goal was not to create a fragrance for a specific woman, but to evoke a feeling. "Perfume is very intimate," he explains. "I like to think there's a special interaction between someone and the perfume." He believes that Comète can enhance emotions, brighten one's mood, "and make one's personality sparkle." This is a testament to the power of perfume, "which can evoke a deep emotional response." The creation of Comète is a reflection of CHANEL's commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

Polge's use of natural ingredients and his attention to detail demonstrate the brand's dedication to excellence. As a perfume, Comète is a celebration of the stars and the beauty they represent. Information for this article was obtained from "S magazine".

Perfume inspired by stars.

The whispers of the cosmos have long fascinated the human soul. And none more so than the delicate art of perfumery. For in the darkness of the night sky, hidden stars twinkle, beckoning us to their celestial realm. And so, the master perfumer, Olivier Polge, has conjured forth a scent that captures the essence of these heavenly bodies - Comète, the newest addition to the Les Exclusifs de Chanel line.

Like the stars themselves, Comète shines with an otherworldly aura, its powdery, luminous quality transported from the realm of the divine. The cherry blossom accord, heliotrope, and iris notes blend in a harmony that echoes the celestial music of the spheres. As the wearer applies the fragrance, the scent unfolds, a rich tapestry of mystery and allure, evoking the whispered secrets of the cosmos.

But what lies behind this astral essence? The meticulous attention to detail... the dedication to craftsmanship, and the reverence for the natural ingredients that comprise Comète. The quote by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel:

"I want to cover women in constellations... Stars!", resonated with me, as it speaks to the timeless connection between beauty and the cosmos. The article highlights Olivier Polge's passion for creating a fragrance that evokes a feeling, rather than a specific scent for a particular woman.

His use of natural ingredients, such as iris, and his attention to detail are truly impressive. According to Polge, perfume is an intimate experience, and he believes that Comète can enhance emotions, brighten one's mood, and make one's personality sparkle. What struck me was the level of expertise and craftsmanship that goes into creating this fragrance.

The article explains that CHANEL's team cultivates iris in the south of France, taking three years for the plants to develop their roots before the scent can be extracted. After six years... the iris can be fully extracted and used in the perfume. This level of dedication to quality is unparalleled in the industry.

I was also impressed by the unique blend of notes that make up Comète. The combination of cherry blossom accord, heliotrope, and iris creates a fragrance that is powdery, luminous, and flowery. “ I wanted to cover women in constellations…Stars!” said Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in 1932. She was talking about her first high jewellery collection, which featured one particularly notable piece—a glittery diamond necklace shaped like a comet, with a head that hugged the neck and a tail that spilled into a burst of stars on the chest.
From that collection on, the designer was partial to using stars and comets as celestial symbols in her world to enhance women's beauty. And now, 92 years later, CHANEL 's in-house perfumer Olivier Polge borrows Gabrielle Chanel's inspiration to create a new perfume in the French fashion house's Les Exclusifs de Chanel line, called Comète .
“It makes me think of stardust,” says Polge of the cosmic splendour. “So I had this idea of a perfume that is very powdery and luminous at the same time…and flowery as well.” To achieve this, Polge suffused the fragrance with a cherry blossom accord of sparkling fruity notes, heliotrope for flowery and nutty notes, and iris for powdery and woody notes.
At CHANEL, a fragrance's ingredients are just as important as its combination of notes, so not only do Polge and his team create and manufacture all of the brand's perfumes, but they also produce and often handcraft the raw materials, too. “We extract [the scent], and we develop a certain facet,” says Polge. Take iris, for example, which his team grows in the south of France, in Grasse.
“It takes three years in the soil to develop the roots, because we extract the scent out of the root…and the smell of the ingredient [only] develops as it dries,” says Polge. “And after six years [we're] able to extract the scent.”
