Universal describes the project as a “radical redo” and confirms it will not connect to 2023's The Exorcist: Believer, which grossed $136.2 million worldwide. The studio also states that the reboot tells an entirely new story unrelated to previous entries in the franchise.

Blumhouse announced Flanagan's full commitment to the film in May 2024.

The new film will release during the 2027 spring break period. It shares the date only with Sony's animated film Buds.
Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment are producing the film with Red Room Pictures. David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Mike Flanagan are producers. Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serve as executive producers.

William Friedkin directed the original The Exorcist in 1973. William Peter Blatty wrote the screenplay. The film achieved both box office and critical success.
