This sack creates a pocket of silence. It protects the legs. It covers the heart. I’ve seen reports where this bivy kept a driver warm in a stalled car until morning while the temperature outside dropped below freezing. The heat builds up fast inside the plastic walls.

The stress test

I spread the sack over a bed of jagged stone. The material did not tear. I am often skeptical of gear that costs less than a sandwich. The construction proved me wrong. Rain drummed against the plastic. The interior stayed dry. No water leaked through the heat-sealed seams. Other hikers use it as a floor for their tents. It stays in one piece while a standard foil blanket would turn into confetti. I watched my breath cloud the air while my fingers stayed nimble.

Silver lining coats the inner walls. This layer bounces the warmth back to the body. A drawstring pulls the opening tight around the neck. A compass hangs from a clip. It shows the path to the north. A whistle built into the buckle sounds a high note through the trees. I wouldn't step into the brush without a way to call out. The whole thing weighs five ounces. It takes up no more room than a soda can. Wait, there’s more to the design than just the heat-reflective walls. The needle on the compass finds its mark and stays steady despite the shaking of my hands.
